ASUU Gives Reason for Rejecting Babalakin, Says Strike Continues The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that the ongoing strike by the union will continue until the federal government resolve all the issues in contention. It also said it has rejected Babalakin who led the FG negotiation team. This stance is coming as the Union maintained that the first meeting held with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige has yet to go into substantive issues which led to the strike. While speaking to newsmen after the Congress of the Union, chairman ASUU, University of Ibadan, Dr Deji Omole said ASUU members will not allow the ruling elite to destroy the heritage of the poor which is qualitative public varsity education. According to Omole, Wale Babalakin who is the leader of Federal Government team is being rejected by the Union because he is an interested party pursuing a private university license and will do everything to jeopardize public education funding.

ASUU Strike: Lecturers To Meeting With Government On Thursday

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will tomorrow (Thursday) hold the crucial meeting with the Nigerian government. Thursday’s meeting is at the invitation of the federal government. Confirming this development, the president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the lecturers are not optimistic about the outcome of the meeting which he said ”will determine the seriousness of the Nigerian government towards ending the strike.” “The government has invited us for a meeting tomorrow, we are not sure of their seriousness because we have been discussing with them for 16 months without any result,” he said. On the readiness of the lecturers to call off the strike if tomorrow’s meeting swings in their favour, he said “after the meeting, we will tell members the outcome. Hoodlums have reportedly stormed INEC office in Akwa Ibom, making away with as many as 2,045 PVCs. According to a report by Punch Metro, the National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission Supervising Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Delta states, Dr.Mustapha Lecky, has said that a total of 2,045 Permanent Voters Cards have been stolen by suspected hoodlums in the state. Lecky disclosed this at the Commission’s Secretariat in Uyo, the state capital, while briefing newsmen at the end of his assessment tour of the state to ascertain the success of display of voters’ list. The  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), says it is ready to negotiate with government toward ending its one-week old industrial action. Its President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who was guest on TVC News Breakfast show on Tuesday, also advised government to establish an education bank for proper funding of universities. He regretted the attitude of government to the university lecturers’ demands, saying that letters notifying government of the strike, which were submitted to the education and labour ministries on Nov. 5, had not been replied. “We wrote to inform the ministries that we had resumed our strike. We told them that we had resumed the strike we suspended in Sept. 2017 because government failed to implement agreements we signed. “The ministries signed to acknowledge receipt of the copies we gave them, but none has written a reply to us,” he said. EFCC Begins Process To Extradite Diezani From UK

 The  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says the process for the extradition of Deziani Alison-Madueke, former minister of petroleum, from the UK has begun. Tony Orilade, acting spokesman of the commission, disclosed this in an interview with NAN on Sunday in Abuja. Orilade said the EFCC’s operations department has made a presentation to the legal department to commence the process, and that it has commenced. He, however, said the action had to be processed through the office of the attorney-general of the federation, explaining that it was not something the commission would commence and conclude on its own. “It is ongoing. ASUU strike paralyses academic activities at UI

University of Ibadan Academic activities were yesterday grounded at the University of Ibadan (UI) following the strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). While lecturers stayed away from classes, students were seen loitering around their hall of residences and classrooms. Some students said they were confused whether to vacate the campus and go back to their parents since they did not know how long the strike would last. When The Guardian went round some faculties like Arts, Education, Agriculture and the Social Sciences, lecture rooms were put under lock and key. ASUU UI Chairman, Dr. Deji Omole, while addressing the congress of the union, asked members to fight for the future of the Nigerian child being deliberately sidelined by the government. ASUU Shuts Down FUTO, Accuses FG Of Neglect

Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday shut down all academic and non academic activities at the Federal University of Technology , Owerri , in solidarity with the nationwide industrial action embarked upon by the academic body . The Union also declared a “ no teaching , no examination, no attendance to statutory meetings ” until its demands are met by the Federal Government.
