Buhari Should Approve The Recruitment Of 155,000 Police Officers - IGP Idris
The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to approve a yearly recruitment of 31,000 police personnel in the next five years to help the force effectively police the country.
IGP Idris who spoke at the Passing Out Parade of 313 General Duty Recruit Constables at the Police Training School, Wannune, Tarka local government area of Benue state said the policy would also help the country meet the United Nations recognized policing standard.
While commending the President for approving the recruitment of 10,000 personnel last year, the IGP said, “like Oliver Twist, let me again appeal to Mr. President to further approve the recruitment of 31,000 Police Officers yearly for the next five years.
Represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge Zone 4, Mr. Alkali Usman, the IGP said “this will enable the Nigeria Police operate within the United Nations approved policing ratio of 1:4 because currently the Nigeria Police Force is operating a ratio of 1:6 which is far below the approved United Nations ratio.”
The Police boss who implored the new recruits to shun acts inimical to the ethics of their job cautioned that he would not hesitate to deal decisively with any police officer found violating the laws of the land.
In his speech, Governor Samuel Ortom who was represented by his Deputy, Benson Abounu noted that the Nigerian Police had grown over the years and became one of the best in Africa.
He stated that the call for the recruitment of more hands in the force by the IGP was apt given the increasing cases of crime across the country assuring that the state government would continue to partner the force to ensure the security of lives and property in the state.
